Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Dutch Oven or Tall Pot
  • Strainer
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Wax or Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 2-3 Navel Oranges sliced into 1/4 inch slices or thinner
  • 2 Cups of Sugar
  • 1 Cup of Water
  • About 10 Ounces of Chocolate Chips can be sweet, semi-sweet, or dark
  • Topping s- Optional

Instructions

  • Sugar Syrup- Begin by adding the cups of sugar and cup of water to a pot. Bring the pot of sugar water to a boil, stirring occasionally until the has fully dissolved.
  • Orange Slice Simmer- Once the sugar has completely dissolved, add the orange slices to the pot of sugar syrup. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let the orange slices simmer for about an hour, or until they are translucent, stirring occasionally.
  • Air Dry the Orange Slices- Next, carefully remove the orange slices from the syrup. Transfer the oranges to a drying rack with a pan or parchment paper underneath to catch all of the drippings. Let the orange slices dry for at least a few hours or overnight until the oranges are a little tacky but not super sticky.
  • Dip Candied Orange Slices into Chocolate- Once the candied orange slices are dry enough to the point where they aren't too sticky but still a little tacky, heat up the chocolate, per the chocolate's instructions. Begin dipping the orange slices once the chocolate is melted. You can dip the orange slices by laying one side of the candied orange slice face down in the chocolate and using a rubber spatula to help evenly spread the chocolate on the orange slice. Or you can dip half of the orange slice into the chocolate. Completely your choice.
  • Add Toppings- Lay the chocolate covered orange slices to either a drying rack, parchment paper, or wax paper and add any toppings. Let chocolate dry completely before enjoying.

Notes

When slicing the oranges, keep in mind that the thinner you can slice them, the better! This will ensure that you have an easier time getting the oranges to become candied because it may take less simmering time.
Be sure to save the syrup after you take the oranges out of it! This syrup makes a delicious topping for ice cream, pancakes, and more.
I like to use naval oranges because they are easy to find in most grocery stores. Make sure you get organic if possible and to thoroughly wash the oranges before making the candied orange slices.
It's alright if the orange slices are not hard. In fact, they are supposed to bend a little when picked up. They should feel tacky but not super sticky or wet. If the oranges do feel overly sticky or wet you can dab them a little bit with a paper towel and/or let them air dry longer.
These chocolate covered orange slices make wonderful gifts! You could pick out a fun tin or container and use wax or parchment paper to keep the orange slices separated.
