Are you looking for the perfect elevated gift to give around the holidays? Or perhaps, you’d like to add a new, tasty tradition to your holiday season? If this is you, or maybe you’d just like to try something new, then I’ve got just the fun, easy recipe for you. My chocolate covered orange slices recipe is the perfect recipe to make an elevated candy that will impress family and friends.

What does chocolate covered orange slices candy taste like?

Orange peels are known for their bolder citrus flavor profile in comparison to the meat of the fruit. If you pair the boldness of the peel with a smooth, chocolate flavor, and the slight sweetness of the meat of the fruit, you get chocolate covered orange slices!

Also, you don’t have to worry about the orange peels being bitter! If you follow this recipe, your candied chocolate covered orange slices should turn out sweet but still packed with flavor.

Are orange peels good for you?

The short answer is yes. Orange peels are high in some vitamins such as vitamin c. Also, they contain fiber, which is another plus. You can find more orange information by clicking here.

However, be sure to get well sourced oranges, such as organic ones, because oranges can be sprayed with pesticides. Therefore, you will want to be sure to wash your oranges with hot water before candying them.

What type of oranges should I use?

You should be able to use any type of orange, but try to get organic. It’s always a good idea to try to got for an option that doesn’t expose you to any harm chemicals and/or pesticides.

Can I use other types of citrus fruits?

Yes, you certainly can! Simmering time and air drying time might vary a little, but you could use limes, lemons, grapefruits, and or blood oranges. Let me know in the comments if you happen to use any of these other types of citrus fruits!

What type of chocolate should I use?

I recommend using baking chocolate, it can be milk, semi-sweet, or dark based on your own preference. If you find yourself in a pinch, chocolate chips will do too. If using chocolate chips, make sure to add a little coconut oil to help the chocolate get a smoother consistency.

How should I slice the oranges for the chocolate covered orange slices?

Honestly, the thinner the better! Try to get 1/4th of an inch. One way to know that they are thin enough, is if they are translucent when held up to a light.

  • Air Dry the Orange Slices- Next, carefully remove the orange slices from the syrup. Transfer the oranges to a drying rack with a pan or parchment paper underneath to catch all of the drippings. Let the orange slices dry for at least a few hours or overnight until the oranges are a little tacky but not super sticky.

  • Dip Candied Orange Slices into Chocolate- Once the candied orange slices are dry enough to the point where they aren’t too sticky but still a little tacky, heat up the chocolate, per the chocolate’s instructions. Begin dipping the orange slices once the chocolate is melted. You can dip the orange slices by laying one side of the candied orange slice face down in the chocolate and using a rubber spatula to help evenly spread the chocolate on the orange slice. Or you can dip half of the orange slice into the chocolate. Completely your choice.
  • Add Toppings- Lay the chocolate covered orange slices to either a drying rack, parchment paper, or wax paper and add any toppings. Let chocolate dry completely before enjoying.

How to store chocolate covered orange slices

Store the chocolate candied oranges in an air tight container and use parchment paper to separate the layers of the orange slices.

Additionally, I recommend storing the orange slices in the refrigerator. This will ensure that the orange slices stay fresh for up to 1-2 weeks. However, you could also freeze the candied orange slices as well. To freeze the orange slices, start by putting them in a single layer on a baking pan and freezing them. Then add the orange slices to a freezer safe container with a lid. The orange slices will stay good for about 2 months. Be sure to completely unthaw before serving.

Notes

When slicing the oranges, keep in mind that the thinner you can slice them, the better! This will ensure that you have an easier time getting the oranges to become candied because it may take less simmering time.
Be sure to save the syrup after you take the oranges out of it! This syrup makes a delicious topping for ice cream, pancakes, and more.
I like to use naval oranges because they are easy to find in most grocery stores. Make sure you get organic if possible and to thoroughly wash the oranges before making the candied orange slices.
It’s alright if the orange slices are not hard. In fact, they are supposed to bend a little when picked up. They should feel tacky but not super sticky or wet. If the oranges do feel overly sticky or wet you can dab them a little bit with a paper towel and/or let them air dry longer.
These chocolate covered orange slices make wonderful gifts! You could pick out a fun tin or container and use wax or parchment paper to keep the orange slices separated.
