I like to think of my bone broth hot chocolate as a “hug in a mug!” Seriously, it is that delicious and cozy tasting. This recipe will help you make a rich, chocolaty flavored hot chocolate that you simply won’t want to put down. Also, this hot chocolate is so easy to make, that it will surely become a staple in your home like it is in mine!

A cup of bone broth hot chocolate, a candy cane, a small bowl of marshmallows, and a small bowl of crushed candy canes all on a plaid cloth.

I also live in the Midwest and we can get some pretty cold winters, so naturally hot chocolate is one of my favorite drinks to have to warm up. I love that this bone broth hot chocolate is so nutrient dense. It is packed with benefits because of the bone broth and the cacao powder. Also, I am post partum and this bone broth hot chocolate is an easy way for me to get in some much needed nutrients.

Lastly, this hot chocolate is so effortless to make. In fact, all you have to do is add all of your ingredients to a pan, bring everything to a simmer for a few minutes, and then enjoy! Additionally, you can add whipped cream, crushed candy cane, marshmallows (bonus points if it’s homemade marshmallows), chocolate syrup, etc. Also, feel to play around with the flavor too. If the hot chocolate is not sweet enough, try adding some more of your desired sweetener or even something like salted caramel syrup.

Ingredients Vs. Ingredient Variations for Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

One tablespoon of cacao powder and a one cup of half and half on a white cloth.

To start, I choose a bone broth that doesn’t have an overpower flavor to it. So, I’ve always used Kettle and Fire Beef Bone Broth. Additionally, I have found Kettle and Fire Bone Broth at Walmart before, but I will also have it linked to Amazon as well where you can also get it.

Next, be sure to use a good quality cacao powder or even a cocoa powder will do too. In fact, the difference between cacao powder and cocoa powder is how they are processed. In addition, cacao is the unprocessed or raw version of cocoa. Again, I got my cacao powder from Walmart, but Amazon offers it as well so it will be linked on this blog post as well.

Additionally, feel free to choose a sweetener that fits your dietary needs. For my sweetener, I like to use organic maple syrup. Also, I feel like maple syrup tends to give drinks a nice sweet, but subtly earthy flavor, which I love. However, brown sugar, cane sugar, or even honey or coconut sugar would work in a pinch.

Also, salt is an optional ingredient that can make your bone broth hot chocolate a little more nutrient dense.* For my salt, I like to use Himalayan Pink Salt or sea salt. Make sure that if you add salt to only do a small dash! Remember, a little goes a long way…

Lastly, a small dash of nutmeg adds a nice complementary flavor to the cinnamon. The nutmeg is an optional ingredient that can add more of a nutty flavor to the hot chocolate. However, be careful with the nutmeg because too much can make the hot chocolate taste bitter.

Nutritional Benefits of Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Bone Broth: The main ingredient in this recipe is the bone broth. By doing some research, I have found that bone broth helps support a healthy gut, provides collogen, supports healthy joints, provides a boost of protein, and more. Click here to find out some other benefits of bone broth.

Cacao: Cacao is what I chose to be the “chocolate” part of the bone broth hot chocolate. You could also use regular cocoa powder too. The reason way I chose cacao is because it can lower blood pressure, reduce the chance of diabetes, improves your mood and brain functioning, and more. Click here for more cacao benefits!
