Who knew that making ice cream could be so easy? All you need is a mason jar! This is a simple yet delicious way to make homemade London Fog Ice Cream in a Jar. It is a perfect way to make ice cream in a pinch! So save yourself a trip to the store or gas station and give this recipe a shot instead…
I know that you will just love this treat, whether it’s the middle of July or the middle of January! It’s also such a fun way to get kids involved in the kitchen too.
Additionally, London Fog is a popular drink that’s typically served hot. I have also seen it served over ice. I happen to be a huge fan of London Fogs, and I have even tried to make my own London Fog drinks at home. I’ll also admit that I am guilty of trying to order an Iced London Fog Latte at one of my favorite local coffee shops! In fact, the baristas there are so nice and try their best to make me one every time that I request it!
What is a London Fog?
A London Fog is a type of latte that uses frothed milk, earl grey tea, vanilla, and sometimes cinnamon. In addition, earl grey tea has some floral notes as well as citrus notes to it, giving this particular tea a well rounded, bright taste.
However, use some caution because earl grey can get pretty strong if steeped for a long time or if you use a large quantity of tea leaves for the amount of water that you have.
Who Invented the London Fog?
Before I knew the origins of a London Fog, I just assumed that the London Fog was created in London. However, upon doing some research, I discovered that the London Fog Latte was actually invented Vancouver, Canada! Wow, who would have thought!
Apparently, a woman who was pregnant went to Buckwheat Cafe in Vancouver. This lady was having a coffee aversion so she decided to order steamed milk with vanilla and then added Earl Grey Tea. I can certainly relate to this woman! With both of my pregnancies, I had strong coffee aversions during at least the first trimester of pregnancy. So I would be ordering anything but coffee. Additionally, my younger sister who is currently pregnant is also experiencing the coffee aversion as well!
And by the way, if you are interested in my birth story as a first time mom, click here! 🙂 I also hope to have another birth story out for the birth of my second daughter soon as well.
Why use a jar to make a London Fog ice cream?
Using a jar allows you to shake all of your ingredients together, which easily mixes everything into a uniform mixture that can then be placed into the freezer for the final part of the ice cream making process. In fact, that is something that I love about this mason jar ice cream, you don’t need any fancy ice cream maker to have delicious, refreshing ice cream.
The right jar to use.
It is important to make sure that you use a freezer safe jar when making this ice cream. A good rule of thumb is if the jar has tapered or straight sides, it is freezer safe. However, a jar with a shoulder is not freezer safe. I got this info from here. So keep in mind that these rules apply to Ball mason jars. Also, be sure to check any packaging or descriptions for your jar too because most of the time it will say whether or not the jar is safe for the freezer.
Additional Toppings for London Fog Ice Cream
You could add some additional layers of flavor and/or sweetness to you ice cream by using the following ideas:
- honey
- maple syrup
- caramel syrup
- whipped cream
- berries
- cookies crumbs
- granola
- nuts
- banana slices
Or anything else you can think of! Just thinking off of the top of my head, some sort of lemon cake and sweet lemon bread would taste delightful with the London Fog Ice Cream as well!
