This apple dirty soda float is refreshing enough for the spring/summer and cozy enough for the fall/winter. In this recipe, there’s vanilla ice cream and cinnamon. It beautifully blends together and you get the perfect “all-season” drink!

I love a good dirty soda, especially when it’s made with soda that doesn’t have too much sugar like the Olipop Crisp Apple Soda! This soda is super light and refreshing. It almost tastes like apple cider, except carbonated! I also love how this soda is a prebiotic soda and has fiber.

Looking for another dirty soda recipe? Then you might like my strawberry dirty soda recipe! It’s creamy and so delicious.

What Exactly is a Dirty Soda Float?

Right now, dirty soda is a massive viral trend. However, a dirty soda float is something that’s more unique. This apple soda dirty float is made with 3 simple ingredients: apple soda, vanilla ice cream, and cinnamon, that’s it!

But come to think of it, floats might still be more common then dirty sodas. I remember having a root beer float every year at the begging of summer.

Either way, you can’t go wrong with soda and creamy, rich ice cream!

The Best Low-Sugar Soda for an All-Season Drink

Lately, I have been loving Oilpop’s Crisp Apple soda. It has a lot less sugar then some other soda brands and has fiber too.

Also, Oilpop’s are becoming more easily accessible as well. I can even pick a Olipop Crisp Apple soda from my local gas station.

Can I Make This Apple Dirty Soda Dairy-Free?

While I have not personally tried to make a float with dairy-free ice cream, I don’t see why you couldn’t! The goal is to enhance the soda and make it more creamy, which I’m sure that even dairy-free ice creams could do.

If you happen to use dairy-free ice cream in your apple dirty soda float, be sure to let me know how it turns out in the comments section below. 🙂

How to Serve This for Gatherings

I wouldn’t worry about prepping this ahead of time because it’s so simple to make and tastes best fresh!

You could maybe set up a dirty soda bar with self-serve ice cream, syrups, whipped cream, and different soda options, like the Olipop Crisp Apple soda. Then people could choose how much soda and ice cream they each want.

Ingredient Variations

Caramel Apple Float: Caramel sauce is one simple ingredient that really shines in this dirty soda float. It’s like the soda form of Dutch apple pie. Simply drizzle caramel sauce around the inside of the cup before adding the soda and ice cream and/or add some caramel drizzle to garnish!

Spiced Apple Float: You cans spice things up by adding a pinch of nutmeg or using a spiced vanilla ice cream.

Soda Brand: While I love and recommend Olipop Crisp Apple, feel free to use whatever you prefer and that’s available to you.

Tips to Achieve the Perfect Layered Look

Leave Room: I like to leave a little bit of room at the top of my glass. An inch or so will usually do. This helps in case the the float starts to fizz over.

Forgot to leave room? No worries! Just be sure to quickly drink the fizz that starts to rise and drip out of the glass!

Soda Then Ice Cream: Soda then ice cream is just my preference and how I’ve always layered my own floats, but you can build your float as you wish.

How to Store

I recommend making the float fresh. What you can do is buy all of the ingredients and make sure that your soda is kept in the fridge to keep it cool until you are ready to have your float.

If you must store, place the float in the fridge for only a few hours at most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a dirty soda taste like?

It tastes like an elevated, creamy Italian soda. Because I use Oilpop Crisp Apple Soda in this recipe, you get a crisp, apple cider flavor profile that blends together with the rich, vanilla ice cream. The warmth from the cinnamon also makes the float taste like a sparking apple pie a la mode.

Can I use regular apple cider or apple juice instead?

Really to achieve a true dirty soda float, you need that carbonation! Regular apple cider or apple juice doesn’t have the carbonation, so it isn’t the same. If you only have apple cider or juice, mix club soda or ginger ale with it. However, for the best results, you’ll want to use apple soda.

Why did my dirty soda float fizz over so fast?

Your soda fizzes when ice cream is added because of a physical process called nucleation. The carbon dioxide in the soda reacts quickly with the air bubbles in the ice cream. To prevent a super messy overflow, pour the soda into the glass first and let the fizz settle. Then, slowly lower the scoop(s) of ice cream into the soda.

Think of creating a float as a fun, science experiment. It’s a perfect little experiment to involve kids in!

Can I add creamer to this float like a traditional dirty soda?

Traditional dirty sodas typically call for a splash of heavy cream or coffee creamer. While the melting vanilla ice cream provides plenty of rich creaminess for this float version, you could definitely use a tablespoon of half-and-half or a vanilla creamer if you want an even richer drink.

What is the best ice cream to use for apple floats?

A good quality French vanilla or vanilla bean ice cream works well because the high quality vanilla goes nicely with the crisp apple flavor. If you’d like something that leans more on the autumn side, try an ice cream with cinnamon already in it or a caramel-swirl ice cream!
