Learn how to make a 5-minute sour cream dip with herbs that you probably have on hand in your kitchen! This recipe is perfect if you are in a pinch and want a delicious dip for chips, veggies, and more.
I came up with this recipe one day in my kitchen because I wanted some chip dip, but didn’t have any. I also didn’t feel like going to the store just for dip, so that’s how I put together this recipe! I just got my sour cream out of the fridge, added some of my favorite herbs, like oregano and dill weed, and some garlic salt. And that’s how I put together this simple dip!

Why I Love This Recipe
I am all for 2 main things when it comes to cooking and baking… Being able to make simple, yet tasty, foods and for foods to be made from scratch, so that all of the nasty preservatives and ingredients in conventional, store-bought foods are avoided as much as possible.
Therefore, this dip checks both of those boxes for me. Like I went over up above, this recipe is so simple. Also, I despise going to the store and picking up an item, only to discover that there’s 20 plus ingredients in something that should only have about 5. And food nowadays is so expensive too! But not to worry, this recipe has 5 ingredients.
What is Sour Cream Dip?
Sour cream dip, is a dip that’s base is sour cream. It has added flavors, herbs, and seasonings to give it different flavor profiles.

What Does Sour Cream Dip Taste Like?
It can vary, depending on what is put into the sour cream dip. My particular recipe has herbs, oregano and dill weed, and garlic salt and pepper. It has a cool, earthy taste with a hint of garlic.
Where Do Dips Originate?
I found a really interesting blog that mentions the origins of dips. However, according to this blog article, sour cream was invented in the early 1800’s. Therefore, there must have been some sort of dip made up around then.

What to Eat Sour Cream Dip With
A classic, and perhaps the most obvious, way to eat this dip is with chips. Traditional potato chips or even homemade potato chips taste great with this dip. And on the subject of potatoes, French fries would also taste amazing with this dip too!
Additionally, veggies are always best served with a dip in my opinion. Also, this dip would be excellent on a falafel as well. 🙂

What to Serve with This Herb-Infused Sour Cream Dip
While a bag of classic potato chips is the traditional go-to for this dip, its creamy texture and earthy herb profile make it incredibly versatile. If you are looking to elevate your snack board or need a quick addition to dinner, try some of these favorites:
The Classic Crunch
- Kettle Cooked Chips: The extra sturdiness of a kettle chip holds up perfectly to the thick consistency of this dip.
- Pretzel Thins or Rods: The saltiness of a pretzel complements the dill and garlic beautifully.
- Waffle Fries: For a fun appetizer, serve a warm basket of waffle fries with a side of this chilled dip.
Fresh & Healthy Dippers
If you want to keep things light, this dip acts as a fantastic “bridge” to get kids (and adults!) to eat more veggies. It’s much more flavorful than a standard store-bought ranch, full of too many ingredients!
- Rainbow Carrots & Sliced Cucumbers
- Snap Peas & Bell Pepper Strips
- Blanched Asparagus: A slightly more sophisticated option for a brunch spread.
Beyond the Snack Bowl
Don’t limit this recipe to just dipping! It works wonderfully as a condiment. Try dolloping a spoonful onto a hot baked potato instead of plain sour cream, or use it as a cooling sauce for spicy chicken tacos. If you have leftovers, it even makes a great spread for a turkey and avocado wrap, adding a burst of herbal freshness to every bite.
Where to Bring Sour Cream Dip
This dip is thick, making it pretty portable because it’s unlikely that it will leak out of a container. So, you could bring it to parties, potlucks, the beach or pool, a barbeque, and more! I would say anywhere that you know chips and/or veggies are going to be served at.

Ingredient Variations
Instead of sour cream, use Greek yogurt in a 1:1 ratio. Just be sure that the Greek yogurt is full-fat and unflavored.
Don’t have garlic salt? If you have garlic powder and regular salt, you can add those 2 ingredients instead! Do a 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of garlic powder.
Add a couple drops of lemon juice to brighten the flavor profile of the dip. This step is completely optional.
Lastly, add chopped green onion, fresh parsley, olive oil, or even crumbled feta cheese to enhance the flavor even more!

Notes
Helpful Tips and Tricks
Better if chilled: While you can serve the dip immediately, the flavor actually gets better if you let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Consistency: If you prefer a thinner dip, try adding a teaspoon of milk or heavy cream to the dip.
Fresh herbs: If you have a garden or fresh herbs on hand, feel free to use them! A good rule of thumb is to use 3x the amount of fresh herbs as you would dried. For instance, 1 tablespoon of fresh dill instead of 1 teaspoon of dried.
Over-mixing: Be careful not to over-mix. Over-mixing can cause the dip to become too watery. Mix until just combined.
Temperature Matters: This dip tastes best cold. So if you are bringing the dip somewhere, try placing the serving bowl into a larger bowl filled with ice to keep it cool.

I love how simple this is. It looks and sounds delicious. Excited to try it
